$45m retail centre to create 400 jobs

THE $45 million Port Denarau Retail and Commercial Centre which opened on Sunday is expected to employ 400 people when it is fully operational.

This was the word from the centre's general manager who is a Fiji Island Real Estate expert.

The centre is being developed by Tabua Investments Limited.

Real Estate experts believe the centre will be the benchmark for tourism retail in Fiji.

"The centre is spaced out so as not to impede views to the mountains and not have an adverse effect on the island's overall aesthetics and environment," he said.

The official opening will be in September, when all the restaurants will be opened. He said the centre was expected to house 32 retail shops and real estate offices and 28 commercial spaces. The retail shops include New Zealand Natural Ice Cream, Esquire Coffee, Mama's Pizza, Waitui Surf and Remarkable Sweet shop. Services include a Budget Pharmacy, Tappoos Newslink Post office, fully serviced Westpac Bank.

Restaurants include Fiji's first Hard Rock Cafe, Cardo's, Dish Seafood, Indigo Premium Indian cuisine and an Italian restaurant.

Mr Campbell said the developers identified some years ago the need for a commercial centre to provide an up market retail opportunity set in a tourist environment.

"It was essential the centre matched the quality of the surrounding resorts and the reputation of Denarau Island given that the centre will be the showpiece of Denarau in terms of commercial activity," he said.
